Toiletless men arrested in Uganda

“It’s lamentable that while the Americans and the Europeans are visiting the moon and are about to reach the sun, in this part of Africa I am busy hunting for people who claim they don’t have the time and the technology for making simple pit latrines,” Tororo District Chairman Emmanuel Osuna said.

A funny story in a way, but I completely support the actions taken by the Ugandan government in this case. To be honest with you, I don’t this poverty is any excuse for being filthy and behaving like animals. This is a matter of basic hygiene. If these lame men cannot dig a proper latrine to do their business in, and end up doing it in the bushes, then just thinking about the potential for spreading disease in the area will certainly cost that community…

Anyway I really wish Africans and their local governments could do something to at least ensure that Africans, especially those who live in slums at the very least live in a clean environment… but then again, does Africa even have real leaders who are willing to help the very communities that elected them into office to help improve their lives and well being??

Making Healthy Eating ‘Fun’…

“Kids are going to eat what’s available, and parents have to take responsibility,” says Ann Cooper, director of nutrition services at the Berkeley Unified School District and co-author of “Lunch Lessons: Changing the Way We Feed Our Children” (Collins, 2006).

She, too, recommends lots of fruit and vegetables, but says there are ways to gussy up an apple or a nectarine that them more fun to eat. Colorful smoothies and fruit kebabs – cut-up pieces of melon, peaches, plums, pears or berries on a skewer, with a yogurt dipping sauce – make healthful foods seem more like special treats.

The above excerpt from this article titled Snack Attack really struck me as odd and I think is one of the reasons why kids are having problems with healthy eating.

When you have to make healthy eating more ‘fun’ so that your kids will eat fruit and vegetables, then you know you really have problems. I remember when I was a kid, I really loved fruit except papaya and I certainly hated vegetables. I never really liked eating the stuff but my mom solved that problem really easy. She let us know really quickly that unless we finished up our vegetables, we could not leave the table. It was a simple as that.

Well over the years, I actually started to develop a liking for vegetables and now I will gladly eat them anytime… well most vegetables…

But going back to the ‘fun’ eating. If kids have to eat ‘fun’ fruit at least once a day, how many days will the ‘fun’ remain fun? I can imagine the kid saying “Mom, it used to be fun eating this ‘fun’ stuff here but now its no longer fun, so I am not eating fruit again”. I would suggest that parents need to step up and simply tell the kids, “unless you finish the fruit and veggies, you don’t leave the table.”

Bumper Damage in Pescadero

Its been a busy past couple of weeks now. My current project will take me through the middle of next week. In the mean time I had taken a couple of days to fly down to San Fransisco and then to Pescadero for a friend’s wedding.

The trip was fun, though a little car incident, damage on the car bumper, marred the trip a little. The damage was actually caused by the valet so the party responsible was ok with paying for the damage. If I don’t hear from them in the next two weeks, then I know its been taken care of.

I was able to get some great pictures, not as many as I would have liked, but still enough…

More on the fun parts of the trip with my next couple of posts..

But, But Summer’s Not Over Yet…

You’ve gotta love the free market system. Summer is not over yet, but apparently the Halloween candy is already in the stores

The Flight on 1Xtra Has Ended

This past Wednesday marks the end of an era on the BBC’s digital radio, 1Xtra… DJ Flight will no longer spin on her weekly drum and bass show where she has been doing so for the last 5 years.

The station went through some restructuring and as a result a DJ’s and/or shows have been canceled. Among the casualties in the Drum and Bass slot were L Double and my favorite awesome DJ, Flight.

Personally, I think letting Flight go was a big, big mistake. Flight is one of the greatest DJs I have come to enjoy listening to. Not only is she skilled in DJing, in selecting tuff tracks, but she is really humble and gracious and has great a on-air personality. I think the suits who decided to let her go were not thinking straight! I still cannot believe it!

But on the flip side, DJ Bailey, my other favorite 1Xtra DJ remains. He is going to take over Flight’s slot meaning that he now has two shows a week. And over on Radio 1, both Fabio and Grooverider remain.

Regardless, I (and many others around the world) will certainly miss her and wish her all the best and are looking forward to hearing great things coming her way!

In Goat We Trust!

Apparently Nepal Airlines, rather than hire some decent airplane mechanics deem it better to sacrifice to Akash Bhairab, the Hindu god of sky protection, a couple of goats right there on the tarmac in front of the plane at Kathmandu airport.

The airline is quoted as saying that the ceremony was successful because the plane then went on to complete its flight to Hong Kong…
